ESOL Center

Students whose home language is not English are invited to take advantage of the free tutorial services offered by our ESOL Center. English and Media Studies department faculty members who specialize in teaching English to speakers of other languages (ESOL) provide support to help students achieve success in their courses across the curriculum.

To prepare for your session, have specific questions or a clear idea of what you want to work on. If you need help with a paper or oral presentation, bring the instructor’s assignment sheet (if there is one); all relevant materials such as your notes, earlier drafts of a paper (especially those that have the instructor’s comments); and/or any source materials (e.g., books or web printouts).

In addition, you can get individualized help with pronunciation by scheduling an appointment to work one-on-one with a tutor. You also may work independently with the pronunciation computer programs in the media room.

Appointments

You can make an appointment in one of two ways:

  1. Access the ESOL Center Scheduling Database and follow the scheduling instructions.

  2. Call 781.891.2021.

Appointments can be made two to three weeks in advance, up until 9:00 a.m. on the day of the desired appointment. After 9:00 a.m. on the day of the desired appointment, stop by or call the center at 781.891.2021 to see if a tutor is available. However, since there is such high demand, we recommend that you make an appointment.

Your time may be cut short if you are late for your appointment. If you are more than 10 minutes late, your appointment may be given to another student who is waiting.

Cancellations

Please cancel any tutorial session you cannot attend so that another student can use that time. You can cancel an appointment more than 24 hours in advance through the "My Appointments" link in the ESOL Center Scheduling Database. If you are canceling within 24 hours, please call 781.891.2021 and leave a message, or stop by the center to tell one of the tutors.

Graduate Students

Graduate students may use the ESOL Center, but they should first meet with Mary Wright, coordinator of Graduate ESOL Tutorials. Her tutoring hours and a sign-up list are posted on her office door, Adamian Academic 095. You also may call 781.891.2055 for an appointment.

Instructor Referrals

Faculty across the curriculum may refer undergraduate students to the ESOL Center by sending a completed ESOL Center Referral Form to Pamela Carpenter or giving the completed form to the student to bring to the center. For further information, please contact Pam at pcarpenter@bentley.edu or at 781.891.2023.
