We all know that high-quality writing is essential in every discipline. Writing Center tutors work with students from every field and major. Below are some ways you can encourage better student writing by making use of what the Writing Center has to offer.
Submit your due dates
If you send us the due dates for your upcoming papers, about a week before your paper or draft is due, we will email your students and encourage them to visit the center before they turn in their work. Submit your paper due dates.
Schedule a classroom visit
A representative of the Writing Center (usually the director and a tutor) would be happy to visit your class to talk about what we do. We typically take about 10 minutes to give the students a sense of what to expect and why it would be beneficial for them.
In addition to our traditional class presentation, we can schedule a demonstration of a tutoring session. In front of your class, a Writing Center tutor can demonstrate (either with a second tutor or a member of your own class) what a session looks like. A mock conference is a great way for students to see what actually happens when they meet with a tutor.
Require a visit for a specific paper
We’re happy to make arrangements for specific assignments. Typically this involves a short class visit, where we talk about the center and then allow students to sign up for appointments. You can send us your syllabus, assignment, and requirements and we’ll get a sense of what you’re looking for.
Distribute bookmarks or brochures to your class
We have both bookmarks and brochures to give to students. They contain essential information about the center, including what we do, when we're open, and how they can make an appointment. If you'd like some to give to your classes, email gfarber@bentley.edu with your name, class size, and department. They'll be sent to your mailbox within 3-4 days.
Schedule a writing workshop
While the vast majority of our interactions with students is done in one-on-one tutoring sessions, we’d be happy to take the time to meet with your class as a whole and give an hour-long workshop on a specific writing issue. We currently offer two workshops: "How to Organize a Paper" and "Writing Good Introductions and Conclusions," but we’re happy accommodate most requests.
Put in a good word
If you or your students have had positive experiences with the Writing Center, we’d encourage putting in a good word of your own.
