“Checking IDs in The Tempest”
The 14th Annual Undergraduate Shakespeare Conference. Organized by the Friends of the Undergraduate Shakespeare Conference and hosted by The Office of the Dean of Arts and Sciences and Bentley University.
We invite papers interpreting the theme of “others” in two ways: first, as the social, cultural, racial, ethnic, sexual, and religious others (domestic and foreign) depicted in early modern drama; and, second, as the “other playwrights ”---such as Jonson, Marlowe, Heywood, Massinger, Middleton, Marston, Ford, Webster, Dekker --who inspired Shakespeare and competed with him for audiences and eminence. Possible topics include, but are not limited to:
- Cultural, racial, and religious others
- Gendered, class-based, and sexual others
- The past as other
- Other audiences—private theatre/public/theatre
- Other media—Shakespeare parodies, video games, graphic novels
- Tragic paradigms (Shakespeare/Jonson/Webster, etc.)
- Comic paradigms (Shakespeare/ Heywood/Jonson/Marston, etc.)
- Other beings: fantasy, and romance
The day will conclude with a special presentation by members of the Actors’ Shakespeare Project and the awarding of prizes, provided by Bedford Books, for the two best papers.

Accepted participants will be notified by email.
Registration for accepted presenters and guests (including lunch): $15.00. Please download the registration form and mail it in with a check, to let us know you are coming. Guests may register in advance or at the door.
