Teaching Philosophy

The Department of Sociology seeks to engage students in seeing the world from a sociological perspective, meaning to able to critically think and examine the everyday lived experiences that are often taken for granted, but serve as the basis for society. Students get the opportunity to collaboratively explore all aspects of society, using contexting their own experiences in sociological literature, investigative approaches, historical legacies, and current events. The Department of Sociology's faculty prides itself on classroom participation and interaction, creating an environment where points of view can be compared with one another, and helping students develop the intellectual foundation to investigate these perspectives on their own and with others. Faculty research typically informs class readings, and students frequently will engage in their own research projects throughout the semester. These skills will serves students across their coursework, as well as throughout their lives.
